Weekend Blog 03.10.26 - Rocktober Is Here
By D.Vallier, HeadteacherUpdated 3 October 2026A lovely week of music, phonics and Year 6 adventures, with dance and swimming successes to celebrate. We’re also collecting Harvest donations for our local foodbank on Wednesday 7 October.
Happy Saturday everyone.
I spent a bit of time singing and playing guitar with the younger children this week. They thoroughly enjoyed a rocked up version of 'If You're Happy And You Know It'. It wasn't quite Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden or The Foo Fighters but it was great fun. Year 6 also rocked it at Hyndleap Warren and Nursery thought they were at a rock concert when their new light table was switched on. Rocktober definitely arrived this week.
PHONICS, NOT FONICS
This week saw Mrs Thomas leading a very well-received phonics workshop for Reception parents.
While this was happening, Mr Joseph’s class were telling me that the ‘ph’ sound in the following words: dolphins, telephone, phonics and Phoebe is spelt differently to the ‘f’ sound in fins, focus, fabulous and February. They got quite excited about their discovery.
It got me thinking about the following poem illustrating why English is so hard to learn.

CAPTURED
Here are a few learning moments from this week, captured by Miss Watson:

FUNKY FRIDAY ASSEMBLY
Several children voiced their unhappiness that Funky Friday Assembly didn't happen this week. It is so rewarding to know how important our weekly celebration assembly is to children and how much they enjoy it. I promise that it will return next week.
HARLEY SAYS…..
"I'm sulking! I wasn't allowed on the Year 6 residential trip to Hyndleap Warren so I'm going to sulk.......all weekend."
JUST DANCE
Last weekend, Indie (Year 4) competed in only her third dance competition and was placed 4th for her slow dance and 6th in pairs. Well done Indie

LET’S HARVEST
As in previous years, we will be celebrating Harvest and thinking about those families less fortunate than ourselves. With this in mind, we are asking if you would consider donating non-perishable food items that we can then present to Shoreham and Adur Community Foodbank.
All longer-life items, that don't require refrigeration, are welcomed but in particular we'd like the following, please: tinned meat, ready meals, canned tuna, canned vegetables, including sweetcorn, baked beans, pasta sauce, children's toothpaste, men and women's deodorant, sweet treats and cereal bars.
If you are able to donate food items, please can we ask that you or your child brings them into school on Wednesday 7th October to add to our Harvest table. The items will be collected later that day to be distributed. Many thanks.
EAT, SLEEP, SWIM, REPEAT
Millie and Ella (both Year 5) swam for Lancing College last weekend competing against clubs across Sussex. They both came away with 5 medals each, got personal bests and have qualified for multiple races at the Sussex Counties 2026 Championships this October! The girls should be very proud of all they have achieved.

Vesper (Year 4) also took part in a swimming gala last weekend. It was her first ever competition and she came first in the 50m front crawl. Great achievement Vesper.

YEAR 6 RESIDENTIAL
This week saw our Year 6 pupils (and staff) enjoying themselves at Hyndleap Warren. A huge thank you to Mrs Bennett, Mrs Crowhurst and Mr Herriott for offering to be part of the residential and ensuring that the children had a great time. I will add more photographs to next week’s blog.

NURSERY TIME
